The format of Saturdays meeting will be different from usual. We will be extracting at the Chapel and John Glover is dealing with bookings. I understand he is fairly close to filling all spaces. There is a lot to do and we will be short of space, so can't have too many bodies.

The clearer boards will be put on during Friday evening and honey removed on Sat Morning. This will leave all colonies with no supers and only the clearer boards to remove. We have 5 Demonstrators unavailable and several will be organising extracting. With a large number of colonies I am concerned about robbing, so will probably only quickly open those with clearer boards on to prepare for the return of the supers in the evening.

For that reason the apiary session will largely be a discussion on a number of things we need to deal with at this time of year e.g.

1. Removing, extracting and processing honey

2. Dealing with supers

3. Treating for disease

4. Feeding.

5. Preparing for winter

6. Anything else.

There will not be the normal two sessions as we will start at 12.00 and go on until we have had enough.

Our annual Beekeepers Supper will be held this year on 9th October in Pulborough Village Hall - starting at 7.00pm. For those of you who have never been before, this is an evening where we all get a chance to chat with friends and family to all those folk you meet - usually obscured by mesh and smoke. You pay £7.00 a head (on the night) to cover essentials and drinks... and then bring with you a salad, pud or cheese and biscuits to share. The prize-winners from the Wisborough Green Honey Show will also be awarded their cups, and there will be a raffle and a guess-theweight-of-the-prize-winning-giant-marrow, so make sure you come with some change in your pockets! Due to the recent lower than average rainfall experienced in many parts of the South East Region it may be that colonies are running very low on honey stores, particularly if a spring crop has been removed. It is possible that a summer honey crop will be much reduced or even non-existent in some areas, as ground water levels are low and plants struggle to produce nectar. It is not uncommon for colonies to be starving in the traditional 'June gap' period and I am therefore advising that beekeepers keep a close watch on honey stores in their colonies and feed with sugar syrup or candy if required.

There will be a hive and frame making session at Dounhurst on Sun 5th starting at 9.30. This was intended for those who have beginners packs, but there will be room for some more members.

You will need to bring your own hive if it is still in flat pack, but if you need frames and foundation they can be supplied at the rate indicated in the newsletter. You will need to bring a hammer and Workmate or similar. Also a sharp Stanley type knife for frames, and sticking plasters if you need them!!

Following on from Tom's message about this meeting can I add to his reminder that those in the Advanced group are welcome to attend the whole meeting where they will be added to the Intermediate Group. Can I please ask those in the Advanced Group to only handle a colony if everyone in the Intermediate Group already has, otherwise you may open a colony twice and someone else not at all. Tell the Demonstrator why, so it doesn't look as if you are declining, something we only normally allow with a genuine reason.

As this meeting is likely to be more hectic than normal and Jane Moseley will be giving a short presentation, can I ask you to be there with a bit of time to spare as I will need time to organise groups.

On 6 and 7 July the apiary will be used for filming for a BBKA video on queen rearing. There is a lot of planning to do, but I think most of what is needed can be done with what we have.

I may need some outside help as the bees may not always do what I want, especially with the awkward season we are having. If you have any colonies that will have swarm, supersedure or emergency cells at the time I would appreciate it if you will let me know. They should not be interfered with i.e. some cut out. I may also need queenless colonies that will build queen cells as I need several lots in different stages. This may suit you if you have a colony that needs requeening as there will be plenty of queen cells and/or queens. If you can help I would appreciate it, but please let me know ASAP so I can plan for it.

A Disease Recognition Workshop will take place on Friday, August 5th, commencing at 9.30 and running through to lunchtime.

This workshop has been devised as a hands on event to help beekeepers recognise bee diseases, and the exotic pests that are now notifiable. There will be samples to show you (subject to availability). It is most important that all beekeepers are aware of disease and can recognise both EFB and AFB. This is particularly relevant at the present time, as several instances of EFB have been identified in our immediate area. Around 80% of cases are spotted by the Bee Inspectors. If foul brood is spotted by the beekeeper it is usually in a very advanced state that could have spread infection to surrounding colonies.

Please note that prior booking of a place is essential and if attending, it is important that you read the attachment, Bio-Security Precautions for the Bee Health Day .

The main speakers 2012 will be Dinah Sweet, who is President of the Welsh Beekeepers, Ivor Davis, former President of the BBKA, and Margaret Couvillon, Postdoctoral Researcher, Laboratory of Apiculture and Social Insects at Sussex University. Margaret will probably be returning to the USA this year, so it will probably be our last chance to hear about her fascinating work.

Dinah Sweet and Ivor Davis will both be presenting a seminar as well as their main lectures, and as usual there will be six different seminars to choose from.
